The containment policy was a post WWII foreign policy strategy by the US to resists influence and expansion of the Soviet Union and communism.

From 1922 to 1991, the Soviet Union, formally the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, was a transcontinental state that covered most of Eurasia.
It was a model communist state that was ostensibly a federal union of fifteen national republics, but in reality, up until its closing years, both its government and its economy were heavily centralized.
The Communist Party of the Soviet Union ruled this one-party state, which had Moscow as its capital as well as the capital of its biggest and most populous republic, the Russian SFSR. Leningrad (Russian SFSR), Kiev (Ukrainian SSR), Minsk (Byelorussian SSR), Tashkent (Uzbek SSR), Alma-Ata (Kazakh SSR), and Novosibirsk were among the other significant cities (Russian SFSR).

George Kennan wrote a rationale that turned into containment and believed the Soviet Union would stop trying to spread communism if the US would respond with a violent counter-force. Henry Wallace critiqued the containment arguing that a greater understanding of the Soviets national security would be more beneficial. Wallace was fired by Truman.
