Samuel Johnson, also known as Dr. Johnson, was an English author who contributed significantly as a poet, playwright, essayist, moralist, critic, biographer, editor, and lexicographer (18 September 1709 [OS 7 September] – 13 December 1784). He is referred to as "probably the most distinguished man of letters in English history" by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. He was up in Lichfield, Staffordshire, and eventually had to leave Pembroke College because of financial difficulties. He first worked as a teacher before relocating to London and starting to write for The Gentleman's Magazine. The play Irene, the poems London and The Vanity of Human Wishes, as well as Life of Mr. Richard Savage, are examples of early works. Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755 after nine years of work.
