The pressures of sexualization can also be increased by the influence and attitudes of parents, siblings, and friends.

Eileen L. Zurbriggen, PhD, chair of the APA Task Force and associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, states that "the consequences of the sexualization of girls in today's media are very real and are likely to be a negative influence on girls' healthy development." We have enough data to draw the conclusion that sexualization has detrimental consequences on a number of spheres, such as healthy sexual development, physical and mental health, and cognitive functioning.
