In 1774, colonial women in Edenton, North Carolina, were upset. They decided to fight against British taxes on imported tea, cloth, and other goods. They did not want to pay additional money for things they needed just because of new laws from Britain. This was not like the Boston Tea Party when people threw tea into the water. Instead these women signed and sent a document to England. They wrote that they would no longer buy these goods from the British. Penelope Barker and 50 brave ladies took a stand. Their protest was one of the first political acts by women in America. Even the British newspapers covered their story!
