Introduction to Square Root Equations.


A teacher wants to make a classroom quilt as a gift to her principal. There are 36 students in her class, and each student will decorate a fabric square. Before handing out fabric pieces to students, she measured the wall space available to be sure the principal has enough wall space for a hanging quilt.


A. If the width of the quilt is w feet, what function gives the area the completed quilt?


B. Using your function for part (a), what function gives the side length of each tile as a function of the area of the tabletop?


C. Based on her measurements, the teacher determined that students will be able to make a quilt with that is 6 meters. Next time, however, she’d like to make one as a keepsake to bring home for her own wall. Since she has more wall space, she wants the next one to be 9 square meters. By what amount will she need to increase the length of the quilt blocks?
