The Hawthorne Effect is when subjects of an experimental study attempt to change or improve their behavior simply because it is being evaluated or studied.

Beginning in 1924, the study isolated two groups of employees in order to test the effects of different incentives on their output. Productivity increased as illumination levels were raised, but it also increased when lighting levels were reduced to standard or even below-standard in both groups.
The key finding of the Hawthorne investigations was that employee productivity changed as a result of being watched. Even while other experimental variables boosted productivity, researchers came to the conclusion that attention was the primary factor affecting outcomes.
