mary applies a force of 71 n to push a box with an acceleration of 0.47 m/s2. when she increases the pushing force to 83 n, the box's acceleration changes to 0.63 m/s2. there is a constant friction force present between the floor and the box. (a) what is the mass of the box in kilograms?

Answer :

Mary applies a force of 71 N to push a box with an acceleration of 0.47 m/s². when she increases the pushing force to 83 N, the box's acceleration changes to 0.63 m/s².  The mass of the box is 75 kg.

given that :

force F1 = 71 N

acceleration a1 = 0.47 m/s²

force F2 = 83 N

acceleration a2 = 0.63 m/s²

force of friction = f

F1 - f = ma1  ---- (1)

F2 - f = ma2 ----(2)

subtracting both the equation , we get

F1 - F2 = ma1 - ma2

          = m ( a1 - a2 )

m = F1 - F2 / ( a1 - a2 )

    =  ( 71 - 83 ) / ( 0.47 - 0.63 )

    = - 12 / - 0.16

   =  75 kg

Thus, the mass is 75 kg.
