B lymphocytes are the cells of the immune system that produce antibodies against invading pathogens such as viruses.
They form memory cells that remember the same pathogen for faster antibody production in future infections. Once the immune response is complete, many of these cells die by apoptosis, restoring the immune response to its original size, with one major change. Some of the B and T cells become memory cells, which are basically a group of lymphocytes that are ready to fight the pathogen, if they encounter it again. Lymphocytes are produced in response to the specific antigens of a pathogen. After the pathogen is eliminated, some of the lymphocytes continue to remain in the immune system. These are called memory cells.
