The two first railroad companies to begin operation in the early 1830s are The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and The South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company or known as Charleston and Hamburg Railroad.

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, or B & O, was the first and oldest railroad company in the United States. B&O operated from 1830 – 1987. The company, which operated on May 24, 1830, served the west Baltimore line to Ellicott's Mills. Then in 1834 B&O opened the west port line from Baltimore to Sandy Hook, Maryland. Tom Thumb was the first B & O steam locomotive designed by Peter Cooper. It towed passenger and freight cars at a speed of 18 miles per hour.

The South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company or SCC&RR Company was a railroad in South Carolina that operated from 1830 to 1844. This line served Charleston, South Carolina, to Hamburg, South Carolina for 219 km in 1833.

SCC & RR Company used a steam locomotive named Best Friend of Charleston in 1830. Then in 1834, the SCC & RR Company purchased 15 locomotives. This allows SCC & RR Company to schedule one trip per day from each direction.
