In 1937, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin launched the Great Terror, also known as the Great Purge, a brutal political campaign to purge the Communist Party of dissidents and anyone else he deemed a threat.

Although figures vary, the majority of scholars concur that the Great Terror, which began in 1936 and ended in 1938, resulted in at least 750,000 executions. Gulags, or forced labor camps, were used to house more than a million people. This brutal and murderous operation left the Soviet Union in a state of widespread panic and had a long-lasting effect on the nation. Politicians, military personnel, and members of the Bolshevik party were the first to be killed or imprisoned. The Great purge then included peasants, members of underrepresented ethnic groups, creatives, scientists, thinkers, writers, outsiders, and regular citizens. In essence, nobody was immune from harm.
