Valley glaciers carve U-shaped valleys, as opposed to the V-shaped valleys carved by rivers.
In cross-section, they feature a distinctive U shape with steep, straight sides and a flat or rounded bottom (by contrast, valleys carved by rivers tend to be V-shaped in cross-section). Glaciated valleys are created when a glacier slides down a slope while moving across it, scouring the valley as it goes. The mountains in the backdrop were sculpted by glacial activity, and the boulders in the foreground were left behind by a retreating glacier. By eroding the terrain under them and depositing rocks and silt, glaciers can sculpt and carve landscapes.
