Romeo chooses to go to the Capulets' party as he hopes to run into Rosaline, who will also be there.

Romeo claims to get a "soul of lead" and feels unable to attend the party because he is "under love's great load," but he is nevertheless eager to see Rosaline, who is stunning.

“At this same ancient feast of Capulet’s / Sups the fair Rosaline whom thou so loves” (I.ii.83–84). It is evident from this allusion that Romeo is in a relationship with Rosaline and that she too, like Juliet, is indeed a Capulet. Then, Benvolio advises Romeo to attend the ball and ogle "all the admired beauties of Verona" in an effort to get over Rosaline (I.ii.85).
