in-class lectures to answer the prompt. Do not use or consult sources outside of the assigned class readings. This essay
requires no outside research.

In All That She Carried: The Journey of Ashley’s Sack, a Black Family Keepsake, historian Tiya Miles provides a
multilayered account of African American History across generations. For this essay, you should address the
following:
1. What is Miles’s objective in writing All That She Carried? In other words, what is her main argument? What
is her methodological approach?
2. Miles develops her argument by charting multiple generations of African Americans from slavery to
freedom. Choose at least three historical themes from Miles’s book. Then, demonstrate how the three
historical themes are reflected in the other assigned readings from the semester. Pay attention to
chronology as you assess the links between Miles’s book and the other course readings.
