Some people formed themselves into groups and lived in isolation from everyone else…They locked themselves in…Others took the opposite view, and maintained that an infallible way to ward off this terrible evil was to drink heavily, enjoy life to the full, go around singing, and merrymaking, and gratify all of one’s cravings…In the face of so much affliction and misery, all respect for the laws of God and man had been virtually broken down and had been extinguished in our city.
