Washington is particularly susceptible to ocean water acidification. Washington's coastal waters experience seasonal rising where water that is naturally low in oxygen sink below and the part of the water that is rich in carbon dioxide rise to the surface. The water also absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Coastal regions also receive excess nitrogen from human and animal wastes and excretions that can increase the rate of algae blooms on stagnant surfaces which later dissolve on expiration to absorb more oxygen from the atmosphere and increase the levels of carbon dioxide.
All of these small factors add up to make the Washington region highly susceptible to ocean acidification.
