Ironically, the judge is frequently seen as the pinnacle of moral behavior.
- When something happens in the opposite direction of what is anticipated, it is ironic. In the chapters, the judge suggests a scheme to trick the villagers into going to the performance. It is required of a lawyer to uphold the law and not break any laws. Although we are unsure if tricking the villagers into going to the performance is legally unlawful, we are aware that it is unethical. The lawyer should be upholding the law and moral principles, not deceiving his clients.
- The villagers actually think it makes more sense to come up with a scheme to trick everyone else than of admitting they were duped. The villagers deceive themselves into believing it will be simple to cheat the others, despite the reality that they have been duped themselves.
Thus this is irony about the judge.
