Gertrude is a shadowy character with little substance on which to hang a characterization.
Gertrude would be fully informed if she had overheard Claudius and Laertes conspiring. She would be involved in all of Claudius' plots if she has his trust. Even though Claudius claims to love and admire Gertrude, he never lets on to anyone just how close they are. When Gertrude begs Hamlet not to go back to Wittenberg, she expresses her love for him. She expresses her desire for Hamlet's happiness when she tells Ophelia she wishes the young lady had proposed to him. She never expresses any feelings—positive or negative—for Claudius, though.
In the end, Gertrude's personality is still flexible. She can be portrayed as either Hamlet's advocate or Claudius' accomplice depending on the actor and director's skill.
