It attracts water from the surrounding. It is hygroscopic because of the net positive charge of its chemical components and the atmosphere has negative charge. Leaving  hygroscopic salt open to atmosphere on the temperature change results in the extraction of water from air. This process can be supported by hygroscopic salt.
