What is learned helplessness?
When a difficult circumstance is encountered repeatedly, a person eventually develops a state of learned helplessness. They start to think that they can't control or change the situation, therefore they give up even when there are opportunities for change.
As the dog has faced an inescapable shock due to which the dog learned that he cannot jump or control the situation after repeated efforts to learn to jump to another area of its enclosure. Dog gave up jumping to avoid shock in the future. This type of learning is called learned helplessness.
