The Escherichia coli RNA polymerase (RNAP) is a multi-subunit enzyme composed of five subunits including α (two copies), β, β’ and ω subunits. For initiating promoter specific DNA transcription, the core enzyme has to bind a σ factor, which helps to direct the polymerase to specific promoters. The core polymerase with sigma factor is referred to as the holoenzyme.
