A control chart is one of the process improvement techniques or simply it is a graph to study how a process changes over time. In layman's terms the control chart shows if a process is under control or out of control. For calculating the average, there is always a central line in the control chart, an upper line and a lower line for upper control limit and lower control limit respectively.
The control charts are used to serve many purposes including monitoring a process for special variations and their causes and to remove them, estimating the process average and the variation, predicting the impacts of the process , etc.
