The County Election is a famous painting which was painted in the 1950s by the famous artist George Caleb Bingham. He was also known as ‘the Missouri artist’. This painting was an extraordinary piece of art, and it was the first painting which pictured the voting process that took place in Missouri in the nineteenth century. In the painting, The County Election, Bingham shows that a variety of people of different ages and social status were walking up the stairs to vote and, thus, he suggests the inclusiveness of a democratic society. Through this painting, he suggests that all men appear as equals. On one hand he shows equality but on the other hand the African Americans as well as women are not included in this voting process. Neither of them would enjoy the right to vote until some years later. This showed a state of discrimination.
