The better person between Severus Snape and James Potter is Severus Snape.
The relationship between Severus Snape and James Potter was tumultuous, yet, Severus still looked out for Harry Potter. James Potter bullied Severus every now and then, and in addition, he still lost Lily to James potter. He could have turned his face from James Potter's kid and not helped him, but he had a better conscience.
Severus Snape was also bold enough to apologize for his wrongdoings to people he hurt, James Potter never did. James Potter's likeable persona made get a ways with certain things. Severus Snape was flawed but we could see so much of his humanity. Snape is a controversial character.
