The passenger pigeon is an extinct species of pigeon. Passenger pigeons were hunted by Native Americans. The hunting expanded after the arrival of the Europeans in the 19th century. Pigeon meat was commercialized as economical food which resulted to hunting on enormous scale for many decades.
