Let x represent the total number of students

Sum of the ratio = 9

There are 18 middle school students in the band this year

Therefore, 2/9x = 18

x = 18*9/2

x = 81 students

High school students this year = 7/9*81 = 63 students

High school students last year = 8/9*81 = 72 students
