How did the Colonists respond to British policies in the 1770s?

British policies in the 1770s were aimed at increasing the amount of taxes that they collected from the British colonies of North America, and increasing their control over these colonies. In response to this, the Colonists engaged in several actions.

One was the publication of pamphlets that called for independence from the British. The most famous of these was the "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine. The Colonists also began to gather weapons and ammunition in case they would have to go to war with the British.

In addition to these, the Committees of Correspondence were formed which had the purpose of connecting the different leaders of the Colonial independence movement to each other. It was the Committees of Correspondence that allowed for the First Continental Congress.
