The war destroyed the agrarian, slave-based Southern economy, the Northern economy profited from growth in many of its sectors, such as textile and iron manufacturing. The conflict also fueled the expansion of railroads, enhancing the transportation system.

As the North economy  proceeded to rapidly industrialise in order to put down the insurrection, the Union's industrial and economic capability skyrocketed during the conflict. In the South, mobilisation of resources was more challenging due to a smaller industrial base, fewer rail links, and an agricultural economy centred on slave labour.
