Purple sulfur bacteria are a type of Proteobacteria that can photosynthesise. They are anaerobic or microaerophilic organisms that are commonly found in hot springs or stagnant water. Instead, they use hydrogen sulfide, which is oxidized to produce elemental sulfur granules. This can then be oxidized to produce sulfuric acid. Purple sulfur bacteria are classified into two families: Chromatiaceae and Ectothiorhodospiraceae, which produce internal and external sulfur granules and have different internal membrane structures.
