A fugue in music is a contrapuntal composing style in more than two voices that is based on a subject (a musical theme) that is presented at the start in imitation (repetition at various pitches) and that recurs often throughout the piece. Contrary to common belief, it is distinct from fuguing tunes, a type of song primarily associated with West Gallery and early American (i.e., shape note or "Sacred Harp") music. An exposition, a development, and a final entrance with the subject returning in the fugue's tonic key make up a fugue's three main sections. A recapitulation appears in several fugues.
