What was the Crusades?

In the 12th centuries, the Crusades refers to the military expeditions that began in the late 11th century and were organized by the western European Christians in response to centuries of Muslim wars of expansion. The objectives of these European Christians was to check the spread of Islam, to gain/retake control of the Holy Land in the eastern Mediterranean and conquer the pagan areas as well as to recapture formerly Christian territories.

In the year 1095, the 1st Crusade was launched but in year 1291, the Latin Christians were completely expelled from their kingdom in Syria as there were numerous expeditions to the Holy Land and the Crusades continued for several centuries after 1291. However, these crusades started declining during the 16th century with the emergence of the Protestant Reformation and the decline of papal authority.
