O. Henry's Cactus, protagonist Trysdale, has just gotten married and reflects on his past relationship with his bride. In his misery, he remembers pretending to know Spanish. His pride led him to believe that perception meant more than reality.

A spiny plant, the cactus, traditionally accepted as a symbol of rejection and separation, suffering and hurt, becomes a symbol of lustful invitation. This is O's imaginative genius. Henry He changes the deep-rooted conventions of the reader so that the reversal is fully comprehensible. The Cactus by O. Henry, the protagonist of Trysdale got a cactus from a girl he liked in answer to one of his questions. Whenever Trisdale would ask this girl a question, she would always answer him the next day. She begins the story by announcing that her father was a fox breeder.
