According to Charles Horton Cooley, American Sociologist, groups can be broadly classified into two types, Primary groups and Secondary groups.

The primary groups are typically quite small and consist of people who interact face-to-face in sustained, emotionally significant ways. Expressive functions, which distinguish themselves from purely pragmatic ones, are these interactions that take place within the primary group and which cater to emotional requirements. Primary group’s main characteristic is that it has an intimate association and cooperation.

Secondary groups are frequently bigger and less intimate. They might also be time and task-limited. These organizations play a more action- or task-oriented role rather than an emotional one; they serve an instrumental purpose. In secondary groups the interaction and intimacy is generally on a less personal level.
