One of the most important historical occurrences in ancient Greek history, the Peloponnesian War, engulfed the city-states of the ancient Greek world and permanently altered the area.
Ancient Greece's Athens and Sparta, two of the country's most potent city-states at the time, engaged in battle in the Peloponnesian War. This conflict made Sparta the most powerful city-state in the area by transferring power from Athens to Sparta. Two combat phases of the conflict were interspersed by a six-year cease-fire.
In the decades before the battle, Athens and Sparta had already been at odds. Corinth, an ally of Sparta, confronted the Athenian army immediately. When Athens attacked Corinth's interests in the area surrounding Corcyra, Corinth, as a Spartan ally, reopened hostilities with Athens. Finally, Sparta became involved in the battle as a result.
