shaded pole
Most single-phase motors just require the two start leads to be switched in order to turn the rotor in the opposite direction.
An AC motor that starts using a shaded stator pole. A partial short-circuited winding that affects only some of the stator windings, made up of a single turn of copper wire.
The motor is momentarily changed into a two-phase motor during the starting time to get around this problem and make it self-start. A single-phase motor’s stator is equipped with an additional winding, referred to as the starting winding, for this function (or auxiliary).
