Nguni cattle can withstand both extremes of heat and cold since they are light and heat tolerant. They have good resistance to internal and external parasites as well as built-in immunity to diseases transmitted by ticks. They are versatile and robust. Cows will produce 10 or more calves because of their early maturity, fertility, ease of calving, and longevity. The cows wean calves who weigh 45–50% of their body mass with remarkable efficiency. Calves grow at a rate of about 0.70 kg per day until weaning, when their average birth weight is 22.5 kg and they wean at a weight of about 175 kg.
Due to their low birth mass, small uterus, and sloping rumps, Nguni cattle are less prone to dystocia.
