They also held the notion that the Earth's good and terrible deeds were controlled by an Evil Spirit and a Good Spirit, respectively. The Iroquois thought that if they had done a good enough job of worshiping the Good Spirit, their souls would join it in the hereafter. The Flying Head, who resided in the jungle and spread disease, was an agent of the Evil Spirit. The Flying Head and other evil spirits were frightened by the Iroquois' False Face Society, a healing organization, with the use of carved masks, feasts, rattles, and chants.

After the ritual, good spirits would supposedly move into the masks to take the place of the bad ones. Matrilineal means that property and descent were passed down through females in Iroquois society. In Iroquois society, women held significant influence, owned the land, and selected the sachems.
