Answer :

Yes, the missionaries are responsible for Okonkwo's downfall.

The introduction of Christianity and Okonkwo's fear of weakness lead to his demise in Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart. Okonkwo's dread of being like his weak and unsuccessful father is one of the key factors contributing to his failure.

Okonkwo, the lead character in Things Fall Apart, is seen as a tragic hero. A tragic hero has a tragic fault, makes decisions, maintains a position of power and prestige, and becomes aware of the events that caused his downfall. The terrible defect in Okonkwo is his dread of being weak and failing. The missionaries ask for some land so they can erect a church there. Assuming the missionaries won't accept it, the village elders and leaders offer them a plot in the Evil Forest. The missionaries enthusiastically accept the offer, surprising the elders.
