In order to determine what part of speech a word is, one must decide how it is used in a sentence, by analyzing how the word functions in that sentence.
What is a part of speech?
These are categories of words which has similar properties and are distinguished according to the kind of idea denoted and the function performed in a sentence.
By analyzing the word function, you should:
- Identify naming words as nouns.
- Know that pronouns stand in forms for nouns.
- Learn that adjectives modify nouns and pronouns.
1. Nouns names a person or thing or a place and can be concrete for example, Cat, Jane, Armchair etcetera or abstract, for example, cycle, codependence, unfair etcetera.
Proper nouns are used to name specifics and are always capitalized, for example, Rick, Rwanda etcetera.
Note that nouns can be singular or plural and can also be possessive in the case of typically ending with 's or s'
2. Pronouns are not always named but stand in for nouns when the words do not directly name a person, place, thing or idea.
Some pronouns stand in for people's names, for example, he, our, they, or hers, others represent an object or idea, for example, it, these, this while others may stand in as indefinite pronouns, for example, everyone, no one, something.
These indefinite pronouns may be difficult to name without the use of a pronoun.
3. Know that adjectives typically answer the question 'how many? 'what kind'? or 'which one'?
Numbers are considered adjectives when they are used to answer the question 'how many?' and Articles (a, an, and the) are considered adjectives by many because they answer the question "which one?"
However, some people consider articles to be a separate part of speech.
Examples are green, several, dull, plenty etc.
Hence, as already stated that nouns are often used as an adjective, and adjectives may be used as pronouns, learn that adjectives modify nouns or pronouns.
