A demilitarized zone (DMZ) is a security network which protects the internal network from unwanted external interventions into the network. It uses two firewalls for this purpose. One is an outer or front-end firewall which allows traffic destined for DMZ only. The other one is an inner or back-end firewall which allows only the traffic from DMZ into the internal network.

In short, a demilitarized zone isolates the private network from the untrusted external networks. Using two firewalls benefits the user with protection from external malware as well as that present in the computers.
