How did the relationship between the U.S. and the Soviets change after Potsdam?

By the time the Potsdam Conference was held in July to August 1945, the war in Europe was over and the Soviet Union held large areas of land in the Eastern part of Europe. They were to give these areas independence but for some reason, were holding onto them while Communist agents grew stronger.

As a result, the United States under Franklin D. Roosevelt began to distrust the Soviets because they feared that the Soviets wanted to establish Communist governments in these nations. This led to a strained atmosphere and relationship between the two.
