Homer, who was primarily self-taught, started out his career as a commercial illustrator. He then began oil painting and produced significant studio pieces that were distinguished by the weight and density he derived from the medium. He also produced a flowing and prolific body of work using watercolour, primarily documenting his working holidays. Homer, who was the second of Charles Savage Homer's three sons and came from a long family of New Englanders, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1836. Homer's first teacher was his mother, a talented amateur watercolour artist.
