c. More carbon accumulates in ocean waters
Carbon dioxide in ocean water
The ocean absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) that is released into the atmosphere. As levels of atmospheric CO2 increase from human activity such as burning fossil fuels (e.g., car emissions) and changing land use (e.g., deforestation), the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the ocean also increases.
Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide gas to the atmosphere, and the ever-increasing global use of fossil fuels has caused the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to increase to a concentration that is higher than at any time in the past 800,000 years. The cutting of forests for fuel or to clear land for agriculture over the past 250 years has also contributed to higher carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere because trees capture and store carbon dioxide via photosynthesis.
