Question 4 (Unit 4) – 8 marks
This question concerns systematic random sampling from the ‘Sampling Department staff list’ given in Table 1 of Unit 4 (Section 2). Suppose you want to interview roughly one-eleventh of the 86 staff. You are going to choose a systematic random sample from that list using the random number table provided in the appendix to Unit 4, using row 98.
(a) Use the pairs of digits in row 98 (from left to right) of the random
number table to identify which of the first 11 people listed in the table
you should use as the starting point for your systematic sample. Write
down the label and name of the person you will start with. Show all of
your working. [2]
(b) Select the rest of the sample and write down the labels of the people
selected in the order that they were selected. [1]
(c) List the names of all the sampled individuals in the order in which they
were chosen, along with their gender and occupation. [2]
(d) Comment on the representativeness of the sample with respect to
gender, assuming that the full staff list in Table 1 of Unit 4 is the
population.
