The exact number of minority players is difficult to calculate exactly for the same reasons that it is difficult to calculate minority head coaches. The number of minority players is generally accepted to be around 70%. For the purposes of this exercise, let us assume that to be accurate. Set up a hypothesis test that will allow you to determine the “fairness” of the proportion of minority head coaches in the NFL compared to a proportional number of minority athletes. Define your null hypothesis as well as your alternative hypothesis. Once you have constructed your hypothesis test, run a Chi-square test and report your calculated p-value. You may use any accurate method to conduct the test. A simple “paper and pencil” calculation with a calculator may be just as efficient and effective as the use of a statistical tool.
