(a) What is the main impression the author gives you of the man?
(b) Make
a two column chart. Head the columns Face and Clothes
respectively. List the picture-making words used to describe his
face and
clothes.
(c) What is 'implied' about his character?
There stood one of the strangest looking men I had ever seen. He had a very
broad nose with several large
warts on the end. His cheeks were round and they
looked as though they
were puffed up with air. His eyes twinkled merrily under
heavy, black eyebrows. He had
a moustache which I thought was unusual in this
century. The two halves curled
twice around like a corkscrew, on each side of
his mouth. They matched
his hairstyle white dreadlocks that reached past his
shoulders. He seemed about 1 metre
in height, but he wore long boots with high
heels, just like those worn by
cowboys on television. His shirt was laltered and
patched rather clumsily as if
to emphasize the impression of poverty. Beneath
the shirt was a pair of dungaree pants,
ill fitting hand-me-downs. He stood out
even in that busy street with
so many beggars. As I watched, a female passer-by
dropped some money in the bag.
He smiled, showing his 'no-teeth mouth and said, "Thank you, Missy. God Bless
You."
