Read the following speech Dmitry McDavid delivered for his debate team.
I am the first to admit that balancing the budget is an important goal. And I firmly believe that today's budget cuts will define the future of America. That is why we must think carefully about the spending cuts proposed by my opponent. We must ask ourselves—who benefits? And, perhaps more importantly, who loses?
Let's take, for example, the proposed cuts to our educational system. My opponent wants to restrict tuition assistance to low-income families. In other parts of the world, such as China, countries are dedicating more and more federal funds to tuition assistance. This means that poor families in China are going to get a better education than poor kids in America. Is that the kind of America that we believe in?
I'll give you another example. My opponent says that she wants to cut government spending on Medicare. For those of you who don't know, Medicare is a government program that provides health insurance to senior citizens. Americans depend on Medicare after they retire. In fact, most senior citizens in America cannot survive without it. But rather than providing them with the care they need, my opponent wants to abandon them. Is this the kind of America that we believe in?
Now, for those of you who have decided that our nation can no longer afford to assist the poor and the sick, I'd like to share with you an alternative plan. It involves asking a small percentage of wealthy citizens to give back to their country. It involves tax cuts that would affect only two percent of our nation. And it would effectively balance our nation's budget in the years to come.
