Painter Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico in 1907. When she was eighteen, she was in a bus accident and suffered serious injuries that caused her severe pain for the rest of her life. While she was slowly recovering, she began to paint her first self-portrait. Today, Kahlo is regarded as one of Mexico's finest artists. She showed her paintings in Mexico, New York, and Paris before she died in 1954. During her lifetime, Kahlo became known for her very personal self-portraits and her traditional style of dress.
