Backgrounds International standards on human
rights were set in a series of declarations and
agreements following World War II. The United
Nations (UN) Declaration of Human Rights was
adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948. In
1961 Amnesty International was launched to aid
political and religious prisoners. This non-
governmental organization was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize in 1977. The United States,
USSR, Canada, and the thirty-two European
nations that signed the Helsinki Accords in 1975
pledged, among other things, to respect human
rights. In 1978 the American Convention on
Human Rights was set forth. In 1994 the UN
General Assembly recommitted its efforts to the
spirit of human rights by creating the
Commission on Human Rights
United States Civil Rights Act
The Equal Pay Act of 1963 guarantees
women ep pay (to men) for equal work.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlaws job
discrimination
The Voting Rights Act of 1965 allows
African Americans to register to vote.
The Civil Rights Act of 1968 prohibits
discrimination in housing and real estate.
The Civil Rights Act of 1991 eases burden
on workers suing to prove job discrimination.
