The Origin of Movies
(1) The origin of motion pictures began as early as 1867, when Eadweard Muybridge and J.D. (2) In the 1880s, Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope became all the rage in penny arcades, and in the 1890s, French and American inventors developed the first projection machines. (4) The first movie theater opened in 1902 in Los Angeles and it charged five cents so they called it a nickelodeon. (5) As the nickelodeon gained in popularity, clever directors devised new ways of telling stories, such as editing, or “cutting,” strips of film to create narrative scenes, and using sets and special effects.
