The Origin of Movies
(1) The origin of motion pictures began as early as 1867, when Eadweard Muybridge and J.D. Isaacs took a series of photographs proving that horses lift all four feet off the ground when galloping for an instant. (2) In the 1880s, Thomas Edison’s Kinetoscope became all the rage in penny arcades, and in the 1890s, French and American inventors developed the first projection machines. (3) By the 1910s, going to the movies was a major pastime, and Hollywood’s screens lit up with the faces of stars such as Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and Douglas Fairbanks. (4) The first movie theater opened in 1902 in Los Angeles and it charged five cents so they called it a nickelodeon. (5) As the nickelodeon gained in popularity, clever directors devised new ways of telling stories, such as editing, or “cutting,” strips of film to create narrative scenes, and using sets and special effects. (6) The era of mass entertainment was under way!
