The 1920s saw many political/economic and social/cultural changes. We discussed in class several events that fall into one of these categories. Read the directions below to answer the questions correctly.
Choose an event that we learned about in class that represents a political/economic change and a different event that represents a social/cultural change from the Roaring Twenties. (Options To Use: Prohibition, Scopes Trial, Harlem Renaissance, 19th Amendment, Consumer Culture, Al Capone, Flappers, Sports)
EXAMPLE from the Progressive Era:
Political/Economic: William “Boss” Tweed’s actions forced political changes in the United States. He created a political machine in New York City which allowed him to pay for votes and steal money from government building projects for his own profit. This is a political change because it caused citizens to lose faith in government and led to secret ballot voting that we still use today.
Social/Cultural: Thomas Nast was a cartoonist that let society know about Boss Tweed’s criminal ways leading to a call to remove Boss Tweed. This is social because many people could not read news articles but could see and understand Nast’s cartoons and became enraged when they knew what their government leader was doing. Nast used the newspaper to reach society and make a difference
